The excitement builds as Alligator Season Approaches

Probably not what you would expect to hear from a website or YouTube Channel named North MS Outdoors. There are not many alligators in North Mississippi but I occasionally hear people talk about seeing one or two. No open season for alligators in North Mississippi either. Well let me explain. My son has been wanting to go alligator hunting for a couple of years now. He has a friend that has done it and so he applied for a permit this year not really expecting to win the alligator draw permit lottery but he did. Soon as he found out he had a permit he called and said do you want to go alligator hunting. I thought about it for a second and said yes, that is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone in Mississippi much less North Mississippi. So ever since, several months now, we have been planning out our hunt. He won a permit in the Southwest Zone of Mississippi. Fortunately, my best friend from high school lives in that zone and so I gave him a call and we have been working out the details ever since. The next issue was, outside of a zoo or alligator farm I have only ever even seen a couple of alligators in the wild much less know how to hunt one. Fortunately, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks Alligator Program has a training class and even a video on how to hunt alligators in Mississippi. The video is very informative, and I highly recommend it even if you have no plans to hunt alligator. One of the first things the video says is that what you see on the show Swamp People is not how alligators are hunted in Mississippi. Seems that the most recommended method is to hook them with a treble hook, drag them up beside the boat, and put a snare on them. If it is the gator you want you then dispatch it and hopefully it is so big you and your hunting party cannot even pull it in the boat. Another advantage we have is the fellow that got my son on this alligator hunting idea in the first place is coming along as we head to Southwest Mississippi in just a couple weeks to try and successfully harvest an alligator or two. Stay tuned for more information and if all goes well, we will be posting a video of our hunt on our YouTube Channel, North MS Outdoors with the Joyner’s very soon. Please be sure to subscribe to our channel and hit the notification bell so you will be alerted when a new video is posted. We post new videos every week.
